Joplin (Huge Picture Post)

The following are pictures I took (from our car!) while we were in Joplin.  We drove around for probably about 30 minutes, and this is what we witnessed.  I have to say I was actually shocked.  When we first got to Joplin, everything looked fairly normal, and then all of a sudden there was a huge strip of destruction.

The hospital from a distance.

The hospital a little closer, I was surprised at all the flags we saw.

Those concrete slabs are actually foundations of houses.

You can't tell from the picture but this house was off it's foundation and crooked.

Just one of many piles of trash.

Some houses looked perfect, while others right beside (as you can see to the left) are completely destroyed.

Pants in a tree.

There were so many HUGE trees completely uprooted.

You can see all the blue tarps on roofs where they were damaged.

I really didn't think I would be so touched by the destruction.  But driving around you realize that these aren't just houses.  They were homes.  Newlyweds first house, a babys first steps, and years of history were between these walls.  Livelihoods and family businesses completely gone.  Not to mention all the lives lost.  It makes me think of my post the other day, about Ecclesiastes chapter 3, verses 1-8.  Especially these...

"3A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;...6A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;"

Wow...that's crazy. We had a teeny tiny tornado go through near my hometown in Pennsylvania when I was 18 but it was NOTHING like this!

This is truly sad! Thank you for the pictures. You've done a good jib showing it to the public. I thought the place would be a bit better but it looks kind of the same . Then again, this was recent and I'm sure they need more helpers :( Your blog looks great btw. I'm curious but was the background from blogger? How did you make the header? and how did you design your blog button? LOL I'm asking you many questions so feel free to respond as you like :) Again, great post! It's Sophie btw...too lazy to sign in ;)

Thank you for doing this post. We got to go through Joplin a couple of weeks ago. The pictures on the tv don't do it justice.
