"So what do you do all day?"

I was hurt, and ashamed when my cousin asked me this question.  She is my age, unmarried, and working while going to school.  As a housewife, this is one of those things that seems common to encounter.  My cousin asked me this question straight out, and I'm sure she wasn't trying to be mean.  There are others in my family that when they find out I'm not working are obviously intrigued.  I can see the unasked question, "So, what do you do all day?" in their eyes.  About a year ago, before I actually embraced being a housewife, my aunt visited and asked me since I lost my job what my next step was.  Was I going to go back to school?  What was I going to do with my life?  I was lost for an answer at the time, and even now, I'm not sure what I would say.  It's hard to explain being a young housewife to people, especially when you don't have children.  I may not get paid for the work I do, but it doesn't mean it's easy work.  I'm a jill of all trades.  I handle the cooking, scheduling, shopping, plumbing, laundry, painting, updating, organizing, cleaning, not to mention dog walker, crafter, and partner to my husband.  Yet, so many housewives get faced often with the "unasked" question!  I'm still unsure as to what my answer will be the next time someone asks, "So what do you do all day?"

What about you ladies out there?  Have you had this problem?  If so, what was your reply?

Tell them the truth about what you do all day. It's a calling just like being a nurse or a lawyer. I tell people I'm doing exactly what I want to be doing with my life and I'm very happy. People don't usually argue with happiness, even if they don't understand. :)

Oh girl! I hear ya! This past weekend I got asked this question by an Aunt that asks me this every time I see her. She expects me to go back to school, or get a job. I simply tell her that I plan on being a housewife {once October comes around}, that I am currently a housewife-in-training, and then she criticizes me for wanting to 'submit to life of boredom' REALLY!!! I feel you on this without a doubt! I plan on eventually doing a post alot like yours! Yay for the blogging housewife community! Blogging Housewives ROCK! I support what your doing, and I'm sure your husband does too!
